Chain slipping changing gear uphill, New Campagnolo Groupset

Have just bought a new group set, campagnolo Athena. Had it put together on my frame by my LBS. However when im putting power on the pedals or going uphill and change gear the chain slips before catching the gear. This happens whether im changing one gear at a time or whether im changing 3 gears at a time. I thought Campagnolo was meant to be smooth shifting, with seamless transition from gear to gear whether with load or not!

Something's wrong with your set-up - take it back to your LBS
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Do you really think you should be changing gear when you are going uphill and putting power on the pedals? There ain't a set of gears that do that.
  • Ok great! thats exactly what I wanted to know, so no matter what groupset whether its super record or SRAM RED, no groupset can handle change of gears let alone multiple gears going uphill or pedalling hard?

Of course you should be able to change gears going up hill, but you should try to ease off as much as you can for just a moment while you change gear. I see a lot of cyclists who seem to be unable to do this though....
    More problems but still living....

Of course you should. Forget the Sram rubbish, Campag is excellent kit, but your LBS doesn't sound as good, they obviously don't know what they're doing.

I'd lend it someone who has ridden bikes for a while and let them test it - hard to tell whether this is poorly set up or it's just normal crunchy gear changes caused by incorrect use. Yes if you are honking up a hill don't expect to change multiple gears without easing off - but i you are climbing at a steady tempo you should be able to move up or down the cassette without it slipping every time even if it's good practice just to ease off slightly to be sure.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

    +1 Tom Butcher.
  • I think the point here is that if you are going uphill with speed and fluidity the gears are going to work as they should. But as for quite laboured uphill riding where you are full tilt on the power ... then changing gears is not going to be what you would call 'smooth'.

I've only ever used Campag Record and currently run Record 2009.
