New Bike on a Budget

A friend is looking for a road bike and there seems to be quite a bit in sales at the moment, so hopefully some of the more clued up members can help.
The bike will used for commuting but needs to be suitable for tri's as well. She works as a gym coach so money will be a bit limited but she's not broke, I think she's looking for me to tell her how much she needs to spend. So I suppose a good starter bike that she won't outgrow too quickly.
