I have a Scott Scale I want to run Single speed.
I have found this picture which has been converted to SS.
I have an ali frame rather than a carbon one as pictured.

I dont want to use a chain tensioner.
Should this be possible?

if the chain stay length is the same then yes.

The one in the picture uses a White Industries ENO hub which has an eccentric axle to tension the chain, it's not a magic ratio conversion if that's what your thinking.

  • Just use a tensioner, much easier. Only way you could probably get it working without a tensioner would be with horizontal dropouts, but not many bikes come with them.

Why don't you want to use a tensioner? When I had a single speed back in the states, I ran it with the tensioner upwards instead of down, and rather liked the look.

I dont like the look of tensioners!
If I use one would prefer to make the bike three speed.
    Anyone done this?
Guess its just better to buy a suitable frame :(

You don't have to use a tensioner, I have had two MTB's running without tensioners. My oldskool Marin converted to a commuter runs 44/18 no tensioner & I had a Kona that worked with 32/16. The Kona was a little bit out but worked fine.

A tensioner solves all the problems though

You can always run a roller type chain guide at the front as a tensioner (one below only) if you prefer that look to one at the rear.

  • i have a dinky "on one" tensioner - super easy to fix vs trying to find magic ratio etc. i think it looks just as cool and saved so much faffing about. i havent needed half link chainlink , and have had no issues in "push down" mode.

dmr one also pretty nice but a bit too orange for me.

mine runs just as quite as my road commute SS.

someone elses bike with doofer fitted here.
