Modern BB in a old frame
Hi,I've a 1986 Raleigh Record Sprint that requires a new bottom bracket.

Would a new cartridge sealed bottom bracket fit in the frame??I've seen this on CRC and it looks grand for my needs.I know the frame shell is 68mm wide and the axle lenght is 118mm,so will it be okay??The nice sealed bearings, plus not having to manually adjust them appeals to me.

Thanks in advance.

measure the bb shell and axle length and as long as they're the same it'll be fine.
I'm pretty sure by '86 raleigh were on sensible threads!0 -
it'll fit in the frame not sure whether your chainline will be ok with a JIS taper rather than an ISO. I'm assuming that being a Raleigh the cranks are ISO taper.

:?:
The axle/spindle length will always be longer then the width of the BB shell otherwise what do you put the cranks on?0 -
Yes it will fit. You'll need a special tool for the cups though. There are a few different companies that make the tool for Shimano type BB's and the least expensive should work fine. Quite a few people own the tool already so you may also be able to borrow one.0

Thanks lads. The cranks are Shimano,so the JIS should be fine. And I know my shell and axle lenghts,so will purchase the BB later. Thanks again.0
