Help choosing new front and rear mech.

I'm slowly replacing parts on an 8 year old Kona Fire Mountain. So far I've replaced the rear cassette SRAM PG850 8sp 11-32, the chain Wippermann 808, and crankset Alivio M410 42.32.22(not ideal but limited by square taper). After replacing the brake and gear cables this weekend it seems I should really replace the mechs as well.
Most of the front mechs I can find seem to specify a 44/48T big ring and a Top-middle Min. Capacity of 12T. Can I actually use one of these? If not it seem I'll have to get the SRAM X3.
For the rear mech i have a few choices. I'm ignoring the Alvio mech and looking at Deore 591 or 592 and also SRAM X4 or X5. Should I be looking at conventional, rapid rise, long cage or medium cage? My original Deore mech is very bashed up and shifting isn't what is was.
Once I have the rear mech picked I'll need to choose new shifters as my original Acera combined shifter/ brake are all but knackered. 8 speed stuff availability seems to be getting very poor, I think I'll aim for separate brake and shifter.

2002 Kona Fire Mountain, busy having parts upgraded after long service as a commuter.
2009 Felt QX85, used as commuter, lovely bike but so heavy.

If a triple chainset, go for a long cage. Rapid Rise reverses the shift levers, effectively. SRAM rear mechs do not work with Shimano shifters.
44/48 front mech will work fine - I'd get an Alivio 8 speed one. Make sure it fits your seat tube and lookat the cable entry direction ie pull.0
