Tubular scrunching noises on carbon wheels
Dear readers,
I have just purchased a used set of FSA RD-488 carbon tubs with ceramic spindles which appear to be fully serviceable. I have fitted Tufo Extreme tape to both wheels after following the Youtube video. I went out on a short 10km road test as I also fitted new Botranger carbon brake pads to my ultegra set up. Immediately upon leaving home, there was almost a crunching sound emminating mostly from the front wheel. Having re-checked the spidle, which was fine. I can only assume that either the tyres were under-inflated (150psi), or they are seated incorrectly on the rims.
I went out again today 03 Oct, and completed a 50Km loop and although the scrunching has decreased, it is still very apparent.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to resolve this will be greatly received.

Don't think you're under inflated or not mounted properly. If these are a sort of deep section carbon rim, the rim can "amplify" road noise. At least that's been my experience with my Hed 3 spoke wheels. They tend to make more noise than a normal aluminum
rimmed wheel does. As near as I can tell it's the nature of the beast. However, there is always the possibility of some other problem.0 -
Hi Dennis,
Thanks for your reply.
I will try to see if the tubs 'bed' themselves in after another session on the road. However, failing any improvement, I will remove the current tubs, remove the tape and try glueing the tubs to the hoops instead.

I doubt that what you're hearing is going to "bed in" as you say. A hollow carbon rim pretty much creates an amplified echo(if you will). Have a listen to someone riding past you with a carbon full disc wheel and you'll hear what I mean. They are just sort of "noisey". You may be hearing the same thing with your wheels(to a slightly lesser extent). Key words being MAY BE. But I'm guessing that's what's happening.0 -
Totally agree with Dennis, my deep section carbons make a right old racket. If your tubs are quite sticky then that sound will be what you are hearing. Don't bother changing to glue as it won't make any difference.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?
