carbon bars ok to use 'normal' stem clamp?
Deda do a version of their Newton stem that is specific to carbon bars.
This one:

Does this therefore mean it is NOT ok to use a normal alloy stem to clamp round
expensive carbon bars?
Could do with knowing as I've just acquired a set.

Its fine using an aluminium stem as long as you tighten them the correct amount. Probably ~ 5Nm

Hmmm. Either Deda is trying to say that their CF bars have a tendency to break or it's a marketing ploy to get you to buy yet another new and improved stem. A couple of mechanics that I know do recommend very lightly sanding down the edges of the alu stem clamping area so that the edges are rounded and don't put marks on the bars. I would guess most people haven't done this and still ride without any problems and I have yet to meet someone who has had a CF bar failure from anything other than crashes and improper installation.0
