Don't see the point of pedal spanners, I just use a 15mm regular spanner.
    Say... That's a nice bike..

pedal spanners are narrower and there may not always be clearance for a regular spanner. That is the 'point' of them...

For many (most?) crank / pedal combos then using a standard 15mm has a high risk of scratching your cranks (if you can even get access).

Sometimes, and depending on the pedal, you can get them off with a allen key.

I think a pedal spanner is a worthwhile investment though. They last for even and give good leverage too.
  • Allen keys work just fine - you shouldn't do pedals up too tight. Using a pedal spanner for 'leverage' is a bad idea, they can be a pain to get off if overtightened. I just do them hand-tight with an allen key and never have a problem.

I was thinking about leverage to get off, not on.

Steel axles can easy bind into alloy cranks, even if well greased before installation.
