Getting back to biking after many years away. Budget is £700 for a MTB that I can also commute on (with a change of tyres). I've been to two of my LBS's and been suggested the GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc Hydro for £460.00 (I can get it at £415 online but Id rather support my lbs) or Cube ltd Comp for £690.00 (http://www.leisurelakesbikes.com/produc ... ?&id=12808). I've briefly ridden both and either felt fine but would welcome your opinions as to whether it's worth spending the extra £230.00 on the Cube.
And are there any other MTB's for less than £700.00 that you'd suggest.

Remember the GT is 8 speed over the Cubes 9 speed. Neither has good forks but the spec of the Cube is better.
Try having a look at a Malt 2 which comes within your budget and with the 10% discount you could reinvest it even better forks or wheeks. Go over your budget by another £60 and you'll have SLX groupset.0 -
Carrera Fury if you can still get them, Boardman also.0

Thanks for the input everyone. Is the Felt a "steal" at 599 or was it just overpriced to start with? And what do you mean that the forks are not great on the cube? Are they better on the Felt?0
-
Forks on the Cube are Rockshox Dart, bottom of the range. The Recon are a much better fork.
The bikes are different styles with the Cube more cross country and the Felt heavier duty for trail/jump. I'd recommend trying these bikes before buying as they are very different.
What do you want out of the bike?0 -
I'll be using to commute 2 to 3 times per week and then light trails with the wife at weekends. I won't be doing any hardcore MTV.0
-
Then forget the Felt, the GT and Cube are more to your requirements. From what you've stated the GT would meet all your needs and leave some money in your pocket.0
-
Well despite the more travel you get from the Felt, and the fact that is more hardcore than the Gt or the Cube, it's actually lighter then both of them.
The GT weights above 14kg, and the Cube 12.55kg close to the Felt's 12.4kg.
But then again, you might not like the geometry of the Felt.0
