In anticipation of Winter I decided my Boardman hybrid wasn't going to cut it through the colder months so decided to give it a good clean and service. Well, got carried away and ended up with a stripped-aluminium single speed colossus.

Before and after pictures are here:

Parts and materials
Nitromors paint stripper
Steel Wool
2 x Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700x28
Miche Performance 57mm Drop Brake Calliper Set
Brand X brake levers
2 x Mavic A119 road rims
Taya Single Speed Chain
BMX chainring bolts
Single speed 'cassette converter' kit
On one chain tensioner

Total cost £148.91, I am so happy with it and just can't stop riding it. My muscles are burning and I'm getting stronger, fitter and faster. The hills are killing me but eventually they won't (and that's what my weekend Bianchi is for).

My bus to work costs £65 a month so if this bike is as low-maintenance as I hope then it's all gravy...

Above all it was huge fun.

Unless you protect it with 6 coats of top-quality lacquer. Thanks for the nice positive comment though.
  • Have you?

  • Why yes, I have!
  • That's all right. I thought some pillock just took wire wool to his nice bike lol and knackered it.

  • was the lol at the nice bike or the wire wool?
  • Looks very nice, but i bet it'll still oxidise...

My son's Saracen MTB appeared to be lacquered aluminium, but I doubt it had 6 coats. Several years on and most of it looks pristine still, but where the lacquer has chipped / scratched it's oxidising quite badly.

Just keep an eye on it. I think it's a massive improvement on the original.
