What workshopping did you do today?

Since I can't post in the 'what training did you do today' topic today...

I gave the trek a bit of a service today as it's had almost 100 miles on it since I got it (loving it!) and I got rained on most of yesterday. (Even better - I only noticed my backside at 12 miles and it was still fine at the end of the 18 miles so I'm definitely ready for longer rides!)

Anyway, I gave it:
- a good car shampoo wash for the frame
- the chain got a wipe, squirt with light oil to rinse off the grime, lots of wiping to clean it, dry lubed and then I wiped of the excess
- similar sort of thing for the gear pivots
- and a squirt of light oil up/down the cables then wipe off the excess
- checked the tyre pressures with my new track pump and took them from 80 to 100 front and 110 rear (I knew they were low)
- cleaned the pedals (muck in the cleat mechanism)

Since I was on a roll I put the new seat post in the Marin (after finally getting the seized one out earlier in the week) and gave it a good chain clean (it needed it!)

    Nothing.

Was in work all day, then been ill all evening.

My MTB needs rebuilding, it's currently got no drivechain or brakes on it, and the rear wheel is desperate for new spokes and a hub service as there's a quiet tick every revolution, and my spokes are shafted from when i ripped my mech out of the frame and it got tangled up in my spokes, and my road bike is desperate for a clean. Haven't ridden for 2 weeks now due to me working 2 jobs (13 hrs per day to pay the bills) and a stag weekend just gone.

rebuilt my chainset and removed/regreased the bottom bracket on my winter bike in the hope of eliminating an annoying 'ticking' when climbing out of the saddle...I guess I'll find out if it worked tomorrow...

Eeek! It's bad enough having to babysit so I can't go out and ride (although it rained so much this afternoon that they closed roads round here) but not even having time to fettle :(

Best of luck that the bills get paid soon!

Pumped the tyres up, and fitted light :( it's winter.

The looked at the thunderstorm through the window, and gave up!

Picking up my girlfriend's dutch town bike from the powdercoaters today.

So I'll be painting the headtube, attaching a new headbadge and applying decals.

    I'll build it up tomorrow.

Front brake sticking so loosened cable - no dice, squirted teflon spray on caliper - no better, removed from forks and separated the 2 caliper halves and thoroughly cleaned : all sorted.
  • Yesterday II fixed the brakes on the kids' BMX. It's got a gyro headset and having snipped the old rear brake cable because it was badly frayed I found out I needed to buy a whole splitter rather than just a new inner cable - still it works OK now - better than 99% of BMXs with gyros anyway.

Today's task (which will probably run into the weekend) is converting my daughters drop bar cyclo cross bike to flat bars - she's only 8 and it's a bit big for her and reaching the brakes from the drops is tricky. I've had the bits - old MTB levers, flat bar etc - for a while but not got round to it.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

spent much of last weekend redecorating a bedroom. Done a lovely job on the wallpaper though I say so myself. Last night rushed home to put up the curtain pole, only to be told by wife when she got in that it needs to be a bit higher (she's right)

Put on cycling kit only to sit and watch a thunderstorm for a bit, then flop in front of the telly.

Tonight I'll be relocating the pole upwards, filling the resultant holes, and doing a bit of forensic wallpaper patching before helping wifey hang the curtains.

Then I'm off out on the bike whatever the weather's doing.
  • I had the cranks off in anticipation that the new 105 chainset would have arrived in time for weekend riding. Unfortunately they haven't, so the old ones had to go back on. Decided to unbolt the chainrings for the first time in approx. 6 years. Obviously either the grease had died or was never there as took a lot of WD40 and hitting the allen wrench with a rubber-headed mallet to get the chainring bolts to loosen (which they did with a noise like a pistol shot)

Gave the hard to reach parts of the rings and crank a thorough scrubbing and polish and put it all back together with a helping of grease. Gave the chain and casette the best degrease, clean and lube I could indoors. Found that newspaper worked better than rags.

Gave the seatpost a similar treatment as again it had been removed in anticipation of it's sexy new carbon replacement arriving in the post (once again it had not). I had managed to wrench it out of position through some over-enthusiastic peddaling so got everything all aligned and tightened.

Where are all my bike bits?

  • Replaced the OE Bontrager 53/39 chainset with a Sram compact, no problems and good instructions provided. This is to get my new (to me) Trek 1200 ready for the Winter. Also bought new lights, a Torch `High Beamer` front and an RSP `Micro Flexilite` for the back.
Not that I will be training in the dark, just the odd accasions when I got to the local cycling club, always best to go by bike ;o)
As an ex runner the Winter should prove interesting, maybe I should get a job on nights.

Aha, thats what the headlight I have is called. They are actually really good for the price.

As for workshopping, only a quick tweak of the rear mech. The rest of the day I was busy walking, and walking, and walking for hours, it's amazing how hard 15-20km is without a bike

Do people tend to do a complete rebuild this time of year? Or is there a mad rush to buy shiny bits the first time the sun peaks out in spring?

Simple finishing off of building my winter bike - added bar tape and went for a maiden ride to make sure everything was working.

Friday I did the following -

Replaced a faulty cassette on Titus

Replaced chain and gear cables on a Trek

Bled Formula Oro brakes (why are they so awkward?)

Bled and replaced pads on Shimano XT's

Replaced V-brakes for Hydraulic discs on Commencal

    Trued wheel

    Changed forks on Commencal

Oh yeah, then when I got home I did 2 x 20's at 310w, which hurt.....

    Built this today...

    62925_431058433132_502048132_5123071_1435922_n.jpg

It's been in parts for the last few weeks, had started creaking, so i had stripped it and regreased everything. Silent as a mouse now.

Oh, and the innertube on the forks - To protect the bike from the uplift i'm doing tomorrow.

As for the road bike, that got a spin up the road and a bit of lube on the chain, that's it.

Fitted noo bars, bar tape on the Colnago and put my Red cassette on my Powertap wheel.

Flipped and dropped the stem on my TT Bike.
  • Decommissioned Emiliana (pretty bike) and brought Alison (winter/uni bike) out of her deep sleep. With my going back to uni next week and these low temperatures threatening bring some snow I thought it was about time.

Emiliana is now sitting in the turbo and may only venture out a few times from now until spring.

Wanted to stick some nice clean bar tape on to get all grubby over winter, so done that. Probably need to degrease, clean and lube the winter bike. Don't think I'm going to bother with cleaning the paintwork this winter.
  • Saddle swap on two bikes,

Played a game of musical tyres. Sold some wheels, so decided to switch round all the others between bikes. Ended up doing 4 changes of tyres.

While wheels were off, disassembled and thoroughly cleaned / lubed freehubs and cassettes.

Remainder of workshop time was spent tidying up various parts that were all over the bench!

  • Changed my mates kid's bike from Gripshift to STI...then HAD to do the same for her little bother, or else.

Took my rear Hope caliper apart and to clean and fix a stuck piston. Put it all back together and bled the brake. Working fine now.

Changed the tyres on my road bike.

  • Yesterday the Winter bike(used to be only bike but C2W scheme got me a summer bike) had it's mudguards reattached and lights fitted.

Rear wheel was removed and cassette removed and cleaned. rest of the drivetrain was cleaned in situ and then all reassembled and rear derailieur adjusted as the cable has finally stretched a fraction.

today i will mostly be ignoring the bikes as the wind and rain is never nice to ride in and instead will be hoovering the house followed by the BSB on the telly!

  • Shiny new Shimano 105 double chainset & BB were picked up from the post office yesterday (£74.95 off Merlin Cycles. £149 at one LBS). and I set about installing in the usual flurry of tools and rags and discarded instructions. Decided I needed a newer and bigger adjustable wrench to remove the old BB so I paid Homebase a visit, where the disinterested teenager behind the till unquestioningly sold me the £27 12" wrench for £1.16 ("pond test kit" on the receipt). Couldn't believe my luck so exited stage right.

Big and cheap new wrench got the old cranks off and BB out with no need to resort to the trusty rubber mallet. New BB installed on the second attempt - managed to put it on back to front the first time until I re-read the installation instructions and realised that it screws in different directions for differently threaded frames - I happened to have threads on my frame that require you to install it "back to front" when looking at the "tighten this way" arrows. Got it finger tight only to realise than I don't have the necessary tool for installing external-cup BB so out on the other steed for a tour of the LBSs to find one. Third time lucky got one for the princely sum of £18.95. Made a comment to the boy behind the till about "saving myself money by doing it myself". "Yeah, you'll use it once and never again" was the reply. Still can't complain as the money I saved on the wrench more than covered it.

Back home again and my favourite new big tool got the BB tightened in a jiffy and it was only minutes until the cranks were slid through and tightened up (only 1 mallet knock required to get it sitting nice). Today is where I go out for a test ride and it all comes grinding to a metal-chewing-metalic halt.
