Suggestions for replacing cranks and chainrings

I'm looking for a bit of wisdom before I shell out money on replacement cranks and chainrings. The incumbents are getting on 7 years old now and are beginning to show their age.
The current setup is Shimano Sora 8 speed. The cranks are Bontrager Sport stock ones (175 mm) and the chainrings are 53 and 39t Truative bargain bucket ones.
The bottom bracket has a 68mm shell and the spindle is ISIS square taper and as close to 110mm length as I can measure without digital callipers.
I've had a good old google but seem to be stuck in bargain basement territory due to the 8-speed nature of the rest of the kit. Am I doomed to this fate until I step up to 9 or 10 speeds or is there anything nicer that I can buy?

You can use a 9 or 10 speed chainset without any problems, provided you also get a compatable bottm bracket.0

thanks! I've carried on googling meantimes and it would seem that is the case (just doesn't work the other way round with 10 speed chain on 8 speed rings...).
I've gotten a good price on a shimano 105 chainset including the bottom bracket so that should do the job. (if not it's time to re-open the eBay sellers account!)The Stable '04 Trek 1000 | '09 Giant Bowery '72 | '10 Ridgeback Panorma | '10 Cannondale CAAD9 105 Compact0
