Opinions and advice needed

Hi all, I've recently started to get a bit more serious about my cycling and was thinking about purchasing a new bike for the commute.
Currently I ride a ancient Raleigh R:50 (approx 2003) and was leaning towards the popular choice of Allez Double, however its groupset is the Shimano 2300 and I haven't heard anything positive about it. I do realise and purchase will be an upgrade but the antique R:50 is equipped with Sorna.
I there anything you can recommend for a similar price tag or share your own experinces of the allez.
