Slipping star-fangled nut?

My forks (carbon steerer) keep becoming slightly loose - just enough to rock a little with the front brake on.
Last time I did any fettling in that area, I noticed that the star-fangled nut inside the steerer tube had crept upward a bit - didn't seem to be gripping the inside of the tube (if indeed it's supposed to).
Any idea how I can fix this? Can I remove the star nut, spread it a bit and then re-install?
Any ideas?

Carbon steerer tube should have an expanding plug rather than a star fangled nut.
example of what you want

I doubt you've got a star-nut in your steerer and even less so that it's slipping - expect the steerer bung has come loose. Some do vary in design, but generally remove the top cap and there's probably a hex for a 6mm Allen key - loosen it a turn or so and then tap the whole plug with a soft mallet / piece of wood to knock it flush with the steerer and retighten - it just needs nipping up, not strong-arming.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Calling it a star nut may be just me getting my terminology wrong.
[Edit: it's definitely not a star nut: Pictures -]

Whatever the plug in the tube is, I can't see any way of loosening/tightening it, or making it more secure. I've just given it a clonk with a mallet and retightened everythign, I'll see what happens.Litespeed Tuscany, Hope/Open Pro, Ultegra, pulling an Extrawheel trailer, often as not.
