loose sprockets
I recently noticed on my well used factory wheels with 10 spd cassettes that some sprockets rock slightly side to side on there own . The cassetes are fastened on tight. Are worn out hubs the cause?
Come to think of it, i never used 1mm spacers. Cassette compatibility was 8/9/10-speed. I always thought a 10 speed cassette is wider and so doesn't need a spacer. The thing is, the cassette looked ideal fit at the time with no gap or movement.
Should i have used a spacer?
Would having no spacer accelerate the wear on the hub?

think you`ll find ,its nothing to do with spacers and the cassette. i think its probably slight play movement in the free hub. which to a certain extent is normal.
but this is where experience comes into play . at what point does normal movement become worn out and needs replacing movement.
go and ask your LBS basically?constantly reavalueating the situation and altering the perceived parameters accordingly0 -
Right about the free hub play. The whole cassetes rock side to side too much. It's definately hub wear of some kind. I put the cassettes on new wheels and are fine.0

10 speed cassettes need the 1mm spacer, they are actually narrower than the 8 and 9 speed cassette.Jens says "Shut up legs !! "

Yes i see now, a spacer due to the bigger 8/9 hub for the smaller 10 speed. I notice the splines are different on my 10 speed hubs.0
