Brake Caliper probs
Is the bolt on a front brake longer than a rear brake.
I ordered Shimano R650 long reach brakes from Wiggle however the supplied bolt will not reach the nut. My Dura-Ace brake (which is stuck solid inside the old fork - see below) bolt is at least twice as long and it will reach the nut so I'm thinking they must have sent me a rear brake instead of a front brake. Order says front and delivery note says front. Also there is a washer that isn't mentioned in the fitting instructions that comes with brake. Which end is this fitted (I'm guessing brake end as back end has nowhere for it to seat).
My next problem is that my current brake which was on my old fork is stuck solid inside it. How do I go about getting this out. The fork was replaced because it was cracked (carbon) so I can destroy if needs be. It surely can't be nut that's stuck as that will have had the bolt round it so it must be at the brake end of the nut that has become embeded in the frame. I've tried allen key stuck in hole and bashed with a hammer but that hasn't damaged. I want to use the brake again so don't want to damage it.
Is there anything easy about bike maintenance :?

easy to check: the front bolt is 51.4mm, the rear is 36.7mm
there are different length pivot nuts to cope with varying fork sizes (probably not from wiggle though)
sorry to ask the obvious, but have you taken the nut out? or is it stuck?
if things really are stuck, try some wd-40 or acf-50 etc. to see if it frees things up, if not take a hacksaw to the fork, cut a slot, then use a lever to split itmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -

The supplied bolt is 13mm and the my other brake bolt that fits is 23mm.
Will try the WD40 first then if that doesn't work I'll be ready for knocking them off walls :twisted:0 -
not sure we're talking about the same bolt and/or measurement
a 13mm bolt wouldn't go through the depth of the brake
see this diagram...

Sorry to toally confuse you. It is the nut that I've been talking about all along. The nut is 13mm with the supplied brake and 23mm on my current one. The longer nut means it reaches the bolt.0 -
ah, then you might need one of the longer nuts, in the diagram item 3
fwiw i fitted a front r650 a few weeks ago, it went on fine with the supplied nut, the nut went quite deep into the hole in the fork, but if your fork is deeper then you'll need to get a longer nutmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Ok if I measure from the front of the hinge to end of the bolt then it is 52mm so I do have the right brake. So different size of nuts are supplied for front forks. Unfortunately I've ended up with one that is too small for my forks. Where do I get a longer nut from as I will need my current one so can't use it?0

i'd try the lbs, they might have one kicking around the workshop, afaik it's a standard thread so shouldn't be necessary to get the specific r650 part
otherwise phone a place like sjs cycles as they tend to have this type of thing, if not they may know where to get onemy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -

Great thanks.
My old fork allowed the nut to recess however this new fork doesn't seem to like that. It gets stuck where the nut spreads at the allen key end. If it recessed it wouldn't be an issue.0 -
My stuck brake has now been extracted. WD40 did the job though I think I will have a bit of fun with the fork anyway
I should be ok as the shorter bolt can be used my other fork that I'm swapping it onto as the fork will allow the nut to recess as well so I can use the longer nut on my new fork. Hurrah. Thanks for your help sungod. Much appreciated.0 -
Robins bike shop in Bridgewater is indeed the place to look
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category-Oth ... es-356.htmI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0 -
