Can anyone advise me what sort of clothing i should be looking at for winter chain gangs? I have a bit of stuff but advice on most things would be good, advice needed on footwear, tops, bib tights etc.

  • Windproof Gillet (when it's cool, but not cold enough for windproof jacket)
Non windproof jacket (again not cold enough, or blustery cold wind for windproof jacket)
Lycra cap, when it's bit chilly your ears get chilled a bit
Windproof & warm cap for when it's several degrees below that one
Gloves (waterproof pair, and one for very cold weather)
    Windproof tights/bib tights
Cap with a peak to protect your eyes from rain (baseball cap will do)
Warm socks, and perhaps waterproof socks (expensive)
    Waterproof overshoes
    Long sleeved warmer jersey
    Windproof jacket
    Waterproof trousers and jacket
Long sleeved lycra tights (for when it's too cold for shorts, too hot for full windproof warm tights)

    Really have several bike setups

    a) Hot and sunny day - shorts and jersey
    b) A bit chilly night - lycra cap, gillet or thin jacket
    c) Raining on a warm day same as a) but if it's heavy put on overshoes. If it's really heavy (will cool chest down, legs are ok) put on waterproof jacket/waterproof gloves.
    d) Cold wet days, full waterproofs including trousers. Windproof cap to keep in heat (gets wet but should stay warm for ride home)
    e) Colder day, long sleeved jersey and windproof jacket. Depending on how cold either tights, or windproof tights. Lighter gloves
    f) Near zero or sub zero temps, full on multiple layers, tights and windproof bibs, jersey, gillet, windproof top, windproof cap and warm beanie or even baraclava, neck wind stopper (need to get one of these) Two pairs of gloves, two pairs of warm wool socks, overshoes.
    Say... That's a nice bike..

I never realised cycling was so complex....
  • TIs easy. When it gets colder, wear a warmer thing, or more less warm things.

windproof headband - prefer it to a hat as they just get itchy

Hate to think how much kit I have ! Buffs or bandanas are great too - under the helmet for head and ears and when its really cold another round the neck and chin ! Winter cycling is just as much fun as summer - its just done with more kit on.
