Ive played with the garmin a bit, read Frank kinlans page, plotted a route on bike route toaster which worked ok so im getting the hang of it!

The question i have is i am going out on a club ride tomorrow, how do i log this ride?
Do i just have to press start on the garmin when i set off and stop when i get back?
If so will this log my route so as i can export it to garmin training centre so as i can see where we have been on the (albeit poor) map in garmin training centre? or is there a better map i can export it to?
Cheers in advance!

    Yes, that's pretty much it.

Press Start when you set off and Stop when you finish.

Then press and hold the Lap button untill the message 'Resetting in 3..2..1'. This dosn't reset anything as such it just finalises the ride, other wise when you set off on your next ride it will think that you're just continuing.

I use Garmin Connect to store and view my data.

You could also check out SportTracks which is also very good.

Whilst on about the 705 I have a problem in that when I design my routes in BikeHike or Bike Toaster and tell it to provide prompts for turns at 200 ft, it never does, I've enabled it in the settings as well.

Could it be because I download the course as a tcx instead of uploading as a gpx?

    Any thought would be welcome.

    Thanks.

    Slow 'n' old,

Everyone has their own preferences forTCX/GPX. I use GPX as it gives me a beep and flashes the map up with a large arrow showing where to go. TCX files just pop up a small text box with 'Turn Right' or 'Turn Left', these boxes are too small for me to read whilst cycling so I stick to gpx.

Thanks Garry, exactly what I wanted to know.

Strangely when using tcx files I never notice the prompts and yet I have them enabled. :?

It seems like the gpx files are exactly what I am looking for, do you just copy them to the GPX directory? To use the gpx file do you just go to courses and select your course as normal?

    Thanks for your help

I wrote this up a while ago to help me remember how to do it. You need to have a map installed (on the SD card) and have recalculate switched off in the routing settings.

One of the main things I want my Edge to do is to guide me on rides so that I no longer need to stuff my jersey pockets with maps. I've played around with several ways of doing things and currently this seems to be the best way of doing things.

I pre-plan my ride on www.gpsies.com there are other sites but this one works for me.

Create the ride on your PC using your favorite mapping website.

Once you're happy that the route is correct export it as a GPX file (if you have the option between GPX track or GPX route choose the GPX track version). Download the file to your PC.

Connect your edge via the USB cable. You'll see that it has 2 drives, one is the SD card with the map and the other is the memory of the Edge. Open the Garmin folder on the Edge not the SD card. There should be several files and folders inside. Drag your downloaded GPX file to the GPX folder. When you're finished disconnect the Edge.

When you're ready to ride start the Edge and from the main menu select 'Where to? - Saved Rides', select your ride from the list, you'll get a pop up menu on screen, select 'Navigate'. You now have to wait a while whilst the Edge calculates the route, this can take a while depending on the length of the route.

That's it. The edge will beep once at you about 500m before a turning and display the map screen with an arrow on it showing you where to go. It will then beep twice and display the map when you get closer to the turn. You still need to keep your wits about you as there maybe several turns before the one you want, so a quick glance at the map is really helpfull.

Remember to press the start/stop button when you set off.

Thanks Garry, I have been using the courses option using a tcx file but I much prefer the way you describe, I'll give that a bash when I get my Gamin back from repair for the 2nd time.
