Knee warmers - recommendations please

Looking at buying some knee warmers. Many seem to be made of a thermal/roubaix material. In practice, how does this work when worn with normal lycra shorts - hot knees and a cold ar$e? I'm worried that they might be too hot as I tend to get away with lycra tights worn over bibshorts in the winter. On the other hand, would simple lycra knee warmers be too cold?

Any recommendations for which ones to get?
