Stem stack height

Looking for a new stem to go with some compact bars I intend to purchase. I have a problem though. My steerer is cut level with my current stem which only has a stack height of 33 mm. I'm looking at the Pro bars and stem and apparently the stack height here would be 40 mm. I have read in some old ITM Instructions that I have that the gap between the top of the steerer and the top of the stem must not exceed 5 mm. Would it be acceptable to push this limit to about 7 to 8 mm ?

You'd risk the stem working loose easier. With only 1 stem bolt clamping onto the steerer, this will also cause stress to the forks.

If you can fit a zero stack headset you'd be better off, unless of course, you already have one on there!

  • FSA stems have a low stack height, 35mm I think. Most others seem to be 40mm, which as said would be risky.
