  • hmm - bit more info - MTB tyres are possibly one of the most imprecise yet complicated of the dark arts in the world.

We need a little about where you ride (cos there maybe ppl near you with good tips)
    What your ridng bike wise
And maybe a little about what type of riding you do, XC, trail centres, DH - are you particulary aggressive or heavy on tyres (i.e. lots of flats) or are you smooth and looking for something light and fast?

I like Conti Rubber Queens 2.2s and 2.4s - good alrounders
Maxxis minions and highrollers - again good alrounders - and the bigger (2.5s) are good DH tyres
Maxxis crossmarks - my dry XC tyre of choice
Conti mountain kings - Despite occasionally retrying these on the back tyre, I'm still can't decide how I feel about them - others rave bout them but I'm aggressive on the corners and I feel it breaks loose before my other tyres do - but then it rolls quite well and climbs well too...
  • Sorry Tom, should said more. MTB ones yes, ride mostly over Epping forest, but just got back from an awsome weekend in Afan, and I intend to do of that sort of thing. I have looking at the maxxis ones which look pretty good, but ia m being A complete weight weeny :-)
  • II don’t have any recommendations; in fact I have another question.
I’m after a new front and rear tyre and have been looking at Continental Mountain King 2.2, I’d like to know if the folding version is worth the £5 premium over the wired version. The weight difference is 80g.

+1 MK 2.2 in Black Chilli
    Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S
    Boardman FS Pro
  • The folding high rollers are quite light - I run 2.1's on the front and back and never had a problem with them.
    Specialized Rockhopper Comp 2009.

    Maxxis Ignitor 2.35 Folding

Pretty lightweight, good all-round tyre from my experience.
  • Cool - well a crossmark will keep things fast out while the weather is still dryish. Maybe an ignitor or mountain king will give better all weather capabilities.

I personally always run something grippier up front - highroller is a good choice.

Mountain kings are ok but i suffered an obscene amount of punctures using them so ditched them in favour of what i should have got in the first place, panny fire xc pro's.
  • think I might go for Nobly Nics, seem to be a good compromise, but they ain't cheap are they :-0

I'm using Panaracer Cedric Gracia XC 2.1 in the rear and AM/4X 2.35 in the front. They're folding, light and amazing. They're definitely the best tyres I've ever had, not cheap but worth every penny. They're really responsive, the 2.35 is burley and performs, the 2.1 on the back climbs fantastically. I couldn’t recommend them more.

They were very good in Afan a couple weeks ago too, they’re good everywhere I’ve been. Dry trails, single track and mud, whatever you can find. It’s all good man! :D
    Many happy trails!

I've been reading good things on Maxxis Ardents as an all-rounder but they never seem to get a mention on this forum. Any opinions?

Many people will disagree with me here but I find them much less grippy than people give them credit for and don't roll that much quicker than High Rollers/Minions.

I find Ignitors just as grippy but roll far better
  • Well i cant give you my wrecomendation for tyres as mine are Sh!te

MICHELIN Wild Gripr 2.25 ! avoid like the plague !

What i can tell you is that the Panaracer CG range is right up there at the moment !
I had them on two demo bikes recently and they grip really well in the corners on both Loamy and loose gravel surfaces,

    Unfortunately i discounted these because
    A) I dont like the French
    B) They sounded G@Y
    C) I thought Panaracer tyres were for XC Whippets !

I ride regularly in a group and four of the lads have changed to these and they cant praise them enough !
