SPDs with studs (and removing them)

I just bought some of the new range Shimano SPD shoes that come with studs in the toe as standard. That's great when off road in the mud but a pain in the ars when commuting, riding in the dry or on the road which is most of the time.

Does anyone know where I can get some of the little rubber covers that come with the older SPD shoes that didn't come with studs as standard? If not any ingenious other solutions?

  • i saw in one of the mags in a readers tips bit about dripping candle wax into the gaps left int he cleat area to water prrof the shoe's, so may be that?? or some pan head allen bolts to replace them??

If you have some spare studs you can canabolise a pair. With my Lake studs the 'stud' part is pushed onto the threaded bolt. With some effort you can push the stud off the bolt and cut a slice to seal the hole and cut the bolt down to a suitable length, 15mm IIRC.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Looks like the allen bolts is going to be the best bet since I don't have any spare studs.

    Thanks

A friend who commutes just took the studs out and hasn't filled the thread holes.

I don't commute and have left mine in but I'm not convinced they would save me.

  • Put a bit of silicone sealant in there, same around the cleats.
