R1 disc break setup questions

HI,

I've recently bought some Formla R1 and I was using them with some Hope floating rotors but found the rivet on the rotor would interfere with the caliper and I could never get them aligned properly. Rather than spashing out £60 odd quid on the Formula harware whcih gets you the rotor, mount and bolts, I thought I could just get some Superstar rotors for £24 as they were still 180mm.

After one ride I've noticed that there seems to be only wear marks on the top half of the rotor and after spinning the rotor through the caliper, there is loads of room for the caliper to be moved in-board so effectivly it looks as though the caliper mounting harware is too tall.

These are non matching mounts, one Hope and one from Superstar but they are both 180mm and suffering the same problem.

Does anyone know if the Formula caliper mounts are shorter than everyone elses standard forcing me either to file down my current ones or do I need to fork out the £60 for the Formula specific ones?

Cheers,

Will

Hope Floaters are 183mm which is why you are getting what you are describing
  • That explains the front but not the rears.

I wonder if the rear is really a 183mm as well sent in error...
  • Superstar only sell 180mm adaptors... this is a strange fit on the rear then. Maybe these wave discs give a poor amount if surface contact through their strange design.

add some washers between the caliper and the adaptor.

this is what can happen when using alternative rotors.

I'm not sure what this will do apart from make the situation even worse as it will lift the caliper even higher. What it looks like I need to do is bring the caliper lower by at least 2mm.

you say the rivet on the rotor is contacting the calipe?

so the caliper needs to move away from the rivet. so add spacers.

i seem to be missing what your issue is then.

Post mount is a standard and parts just fit. did you get front 180 adaptors? or did you get rear 180 adaptors?

they are not the same.See the FAQs.

  • Oh no no no...

I ditched the Hope rotor to cure the rivet clipping the calliper and get correct alignment. I wasn’t getting full contact on the NEW disc and you pointed out that the hope disc is 3mm larger so would explain why I wasn’t getting the contact. I then pondered why it would appear that I'm not getting full contact on the rear as well despite fitting a 180mm adaptor from SS.

You mentioned spacing the calliper but this was not my issue, I needed to reduce the spacing i.e. bring the calliper downward or loose height of the calliper to get more contact on the disc. Adding spacers even with the Hope discs would have made no difference to clearing the rivets.

Anyhoo, thanks for pointing out the 3mm problem and I think I need some better shaped discs instead of the ones I chose.

the rotor is only 1.5mm bigger. (you are only concerned with the radius not the diameter).

like i said do you have the correct adaptors.

they are not the same front and rear for the same sized discs.

    See the FAQs.
