Hi all. I was thinking of getting an exposure joystick to replace my Cateye double shot lights which are a few years old. Does anyone know how good these lights are for serious off road use. I use a hope vision one on my bars and am looking to use the joystick helmet mounted. The cateye light is pretty good but it would be nice not to mess around with a separate battery. I do some pretty scary night rides so any advice on the exposure is much appreciated!

Expensive for what they are. Light, and pretty well made, but you look at the output and you can get far more for far less ie certain torhes.

I use one as a helmet light to complement the Maxx D on my bars. The beam is quite narrow but not to the point where it can't be used on the bars on it's own. You don't notice it when it's mounted to the helmet and it sits close so it's doesn't catch on low branches.
You will find the Joystick brighter than the Hope One. Plenty of people telling you to go for the Hong Kong import which is great value compared to Exposure, Hope and the rest of main brands but I've never had a problem with my lights, no dodgy chargers or bad connections just charge and go. I've heard Exposure customer service is great but I've never had the need to put them to the test.
  • Exposure Joystick : Absolutely brilliant, used this on many a 12 hour event and been really impressed by not only the beam but also the battery.

Havent used it on the bars but as a helmet based light

    unbeatable!!!

Not just foreign imports, (to be honest they are all made out there), but Fenix too are available from UK retailer.

Each to there own I guess, but I couldn't spend it on a Joystick at the current pricing.

Love my joystick, you also have the option of using the Smartport allowing you to add an extra wider spread front light or a rear light. And as previously said built, designed in England and furthermore have a service centre IF there are any problems

Wait for a month or so.

There is a new light called the Flare

These are coming in at £75 for a front (Flash) and rear light set

I am not sure that it is as bright as the exposure with 80 Lumens being quoted, bu tthe price is very competitive

  • I have a joystick it's great for commuting, not bad for open trails as long as you don't want great clarity but terribly underpowered for the cost!!!

If you want half decent for all circumstances and at the same cost from a uk supplier pop over to lumicycle's website and look at their halogen setup.

I use the 3led setup from them now which uses the same battery and charging system with a different light head. It's been absolutely faultless.

These are decent lights on a budget:

A few people on here used a slightly different and older version for head spot lamps and have raved about them. At about 15 quid, for 320 lumens is a bargain (probably more like 250 in reality)

Great build quality, not let me down in heavy rain. and is ideal as a helmet mount.

expensive yes. but im not expecting it to fall apart anytime soon.. :)

How does the joystick compare to the spark?

It looks to be better value in terms of light output.

But IMHO still very expensive for 220 lumens output. You could get 10 torches for that.

I have a Joystick and a Maxx (both a couple of years old), these days I still think the Maxx makes a lot of sense due to the cable-free design and for some its worth paying a premium for however I think the Joystick now looks way over-priced compared with things like P7 torches. They're probably still more robust and direct re-charging is slightly less hassle but if you're after as much light as possible for your money I'd look elsewhere.
