Front SRAM X4-R trigger problems

While I was out riding yesterday I found I couldn't change up from 1st to 2nd gear on the front chainset. Being new to front deraileurs I did a little reading, and I slightly adjusted the front barrel adjuster which did the trick, only to create another problem.
When I'm now in 3rd gear on the front and shift down to 2nd, I make the change on the front shifter and it skips 2nd gear, dropping directly to 1st. The mechanism in the front shifter seems drop in 2nd then pop out into 1st.
I hope this makes sense to someone who know more about bike mechanics than me, any help would be appreciated.
