I just got my shiny new android phone and am wondering what apps I need. I have never had an app before.

Yeh the one that lets you make phone calls
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

  • Oooooooooooooooh where to start?

Firstly, well done for making the right choice of smartphone....

    Seesmic for twitter
CityBikes and the Little Fluffy Toys apps for Boris Bikes
    Kindle app from amazon
    File Manager
    Wikimobile
    Google Shopper
    Amazon Mp3
    Flickr Free
    ColorNote for lists etc
Navigation for google maps, although depending on the phone it may be pre-installed
YouTube app - may also be pre-installed........

And whatever takes your fancy! Don't be persuaded to go in for task killer apps - they use more battery than they save!

    Wot Lit said.

froyo (version 2.2 of the OS) had Amazon Mp3, FB, Twitter, Navigation, Places, Goggles already installed. It'll be on (or available soon for) the current android phones.

I also have the Aldiko ebook reader, which is a nicer read than kindle. Not so easy to get commercial books onto it, though.

If you really need to know your gear inches right now there's a fixedgears app

    London Tube Status
    3g Watchdog
    Wifi Analyzer

The amount of access the Little Fluffy Toys bike app requires is a bit creepy (phone identity + location - location I understand, but not the identity, it shouldn't need it...) so I passed on it, YMMV.

[edit] the "CityBikes" app covers London and a lot of European cities (+ Brisbane) that have bike schemes, which is pretty neat.

lol. Foursquare can be an obsession. A colleague managed to get to #7 in the London rankings. Involved a huge amount of cheating though...
  • OK I'm looking for this foursquare thing now...

I haven't got it or use it but know people who have. Stalker's paradise, apparently... *paging don_don* ;)

Edit: a mate is the mayor of the princess of shoreditch. This makes me smile

I don't get the point of FourSquare, though I'm sure canny thieves do.

Google Star Map if it isn't on there already. Makes all your friends go WOW!
  • Oh yeah, star map is brilliant! I have no idea if it actually works or not but it looks cool...

Also, how on earth could I forget the one app I use more than any other, that's the best thing to happen to touchscreen text input since... well, ever!

    Swype! Get it NOW!

It does work but takes some time to get a GPS fix on your position.

    Must try Swype....

Swype looks good, where did you get it from? The beta is now closed and there don't appear to be any download links :(

Send them a message asking to get into the beta, there's an 'express interest' button somewhere. It'll only take a few days before they let you in.
