Hi
I like a few others am looking for some advice about buying my first road bike. I've been commuting on an old MTB for a while and started to ride out at other times. Enjoying road riding, now want more speed and fun !!

Started testing bikes at £600-700, Splesh Allez,Secteur and Boardman Comp. Now with some of the deals around for £1000, getting a full carbon bike is very tempting.
Looking at Focus Cayo 105 maybe CB team/carbon.

Are these bikes going a little too far for my first road bike ? Most of the guys in LBS's suggest starting low and upgrading later.

Any advice would be useful

they will do, it means more bike sales for them. most of their advice revolves around that princliple.
if you know you are going to stick at it go straight in with something good.

The carbon bikes mentioned, don't appear to have any adjustment in the head area (sorry about terminoligy) bit worried they are too racing for a first bike.

ive got a tc, it is quite low slung, but you can flip the stem and even get a higher rise stem to start off. you can always just ride on the bar tops if its a problem. i cant see a poroblem unless you have a back/ age complaint etc.

The secteur has a "relaxed" geometry and is a good starter bike for someone who wants a more comfortable ride and be fairly quick with it

Back and age complaint, qualify on both counts.

I like the idea of turning the stem over, do most of the bike allow this ?
Guess I won't know how it will feel til I've covered a good few miles

Tried the Secteur, very comfortable , first impression was not enough fun to splash out for.
