I am looking for some winter wheels

Which would you go for?

I am thinking between

- Mavic Aksium
- Planet X model B's

p.s. currently run dura ace, so anything which gets close to this feel would be desirable ;-)

I'd go with the Model Bs. But make sure you either get some American Classic clips for the freehub to stop the cassette biting into the light alloy freehub too much.

The Model Bs are light for the money, strong enough and spokes are readily available. With Aksium you'd better have the spokes in before they break, can be quite problematic getting replacements!

You'd have to call a dealer who sells American Classic stuff, I can't find them on the net.

If you specify a 10 speed only freehub on the model B's then freehub chewing won't be a problem. (I have one set of each type). The problem occurs when using 10 speed cassettes with taller slots on 9/10 speed freehubs that have shorter splines than the 10 speed only ones.

Good point alfablue, I'd overlooked that  I wonder if you can buy the freehubs from PX?

I have a pair of Fulcrum Racing 7, would these be good for a winter training tyre?

I also would be using the Planet X model B's with a 9 speed cassette, so would this be a problem?

    Thanks

you have a 9 speed cassette? Then the 9/10speed freehub should be fine.

Is it worth buying the planet X model B's or would the fulcrum 7's not be much different?

The B's are about 300g lighter, on wheels that makes a noticeable difference to your ride.

Check the spoke tension on the P-X ones as soon as you get them, and again after 100 miles or so.... Mine were duff and wheel was buckled by the time i realised.
