Brake calipers

Hi
I have a Raleigh that I believe was originally purchased in the early 80s. It has what I believe are side-pull caliper brakes. The pads on it were these really, really chunky bits of rubber.

They have been a constant source of annoyance due to squeakyness, and just generally not looking very nice.

So I decided to purchase some new ones. I decided to purchase some Tektro R538's, as they have the right reach, and have a nutted mount - both of which I need for my bike.

However, changing the brakes over today I have discovered that my front fork is too deep for the Tektro brakes, and in the process of changing the old ones, I've done something stupid (not sure what exactly) that has resulted in the old brakes not working properly. I'm not too bothered about the old brakes, as they were getting to be too stiff anyway, and not springing back from the rim after releasing the lever, but now I only have a back brake, which I'm not entirely happy about.

Anyhoo, does anyone know where I might source a more recent brake that has a 47-57mm reach, yet has a long enough nut to go through my fork?

Cheers.

I'd take the bike to my LBS. The variables are endless and the budgets can be large. You could buy a 10 year old bike for less than many callipers that might do the job.

I think your old frame requires a nut fitting caliper, and you've bought allen bolt ones, which have a much shorter threaded rod. Something like this might do......

Be careful, though, because the brake blocks you describe are designed for chromed rims, and (if that's what you have) modern composite blocks will give poor braking with these, and virtually no braking in the wet.
