hello
i have been given permission by the mrs to get a new gps for my bike (because, as all of you will no doubt confirm should my wife ask, bikes cant function correctly without one).
before she changes her mind im gonna order one fast!
problem im having is deciding between the maps of the 705 and the non map but much cheaper 500.
can any one tell me, on the 705 can you just press on and go? i mean if i set off would the map automatically show me where i am and the roads ahead (as in a tom tom style map) ??
or will it only work if you preload the route i want to do?
ta for ya help!
ps anything else which is completely vital for the bike to work apart from the gps?? lol.

If the 705 is a bit outside your budget then the 605 is cheaper but gives you the same navigation facilites. It doesn't have the option to connect to a HR strap, cadence sensor or power meter.
Don't forget to budget for maps for the 705 (or 605), unless you go for the free ones on Open Street Map.0 -
The 705 comes with a standard base map, but if you plan on riding on anything smaller than the M1 you won't see the roads, so getting proper base maps is a good idea.
They aren't cheap, but you can't use the mapping function very well without them.
There are some less than legal ways of getting these maps (internet downloads) if you hunt around, but there may be consequences!
Best idea is to look around for best price for the 705 unit and use the money you save off RRP to get the maps. www.handtec.co.uk is where I got mine from. Quick and the best price you can get them for I think0 -
You can get great free maps here (many versions):

I have found them to be excellent. You can get a full UK map that is routable (needed for turn by turn navigation) and with contours.
Get Mapsource from Garmin to install the maps. I had to install Garmin's training centre before it would allow Mapsource to be downloaded, but I think you will be fine with the Edge (I use a Dakota).0 -
Sorry to hijack - What if you are running a Mac? What maps can you use then?....................................................................................................
Waterford RS-14
Trek Domane SL6
Ridley Noah SL

Follow my link above, they have:
100813-UK+Contours-Routable.gmapi.zip Mac OSX only with BaseCamp or RoadTrip.0 -
I seem to remember seeing bundles of the 705 where you get map packs, cadence and heart rate straps for around £368 not to sure if this is the street map pack or not ?0
