Fitting 9 speed cassette to 8 speed hub

Hi, I was given a used SRAM 9 speed 11-32 cassette a while back and figured I'd upgrade from 24 to 27 speed, I have sourced 9 speed shifters (rear mech and front chainwheels are 9 speed compatable already) and I've bought a new 9 speed chain. I put everything on ready to install the replacement cassette & then just adjust to suit. Here's the but, I've got the 8 speed cassette off but when I try putting the 9 speed on it apppears to be too wide, the smallest cog doesn't appear to even reach on to the splines of the hub & there is no chance of getting the locking ring on. Any suggestions of what I'm doing wrong? Am I correct in thinking that the 9 speed cassettte should fit in place of the 8 speed? Any idea what the total width of the cassette should be? Any help would be appreciated as I'm due to do a charity bike ride in a week or so. :(

8spd and 9spd cassettes are the same width.

have you left something on the hub?

  • Thanks for the reply, I can't see anything that I've left on the hub, I'll check the width of the 8 and 9 speed cassettes to compare them, I'm starting to wonder whether the 9 speed cassette is actually a set or whether there are any 8 speed cogs in there which are wider.

you might have the 11t gear on the wrong way around. It always looks backwards when you put it on correctly.
