Cutting down seat post

I recently purchased a carbon seat post that was on offer so I am going to replace the value one which came with the bike. I read recently that you dont need more than about four inches of post inside the frame so was wondering if anyone has lopped off the un-necessary excess?

    a guide and a fine bladed hacksaw. 32TPI
    taping the cut area first can help but i never bother.

    Sounds reasonable enough just wanted to check before diving in and making a hash of it! 8)
