I've just noticed while spinning the rear wheel on my bike that the rim seems to rise slightly (2-3mm) at one point during the revolution, maing the wheel slightly oval shaped! can this be fixed by my LBS of is it a new rim??

Almost certainly. If you have a spoke key you can probably do it yourself. There are some good guides to be found on the web showing you what to do.

FWIW British Standard for new bikes allows a 5mm variation in radial true - can easily be rectified by knowledgeable use of a spoke key. Also check that the 'hop' isn't due to a bulge in the tyre.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

cheers for the replies chaps, i've dropped it into a reputable local bike shop so they can fix it quickly rather than me making it worse!

always best to inspect wheel with tyre and inner tube removed from the wheel, a poorly fitted/damaged inner tube with bulges or a damaged tyre can give the illusion of a buckled wheel (lateral true) or have "hops" in the hoops (radial true).

it is far easier to bugger up a wheel than it is to lat true, rad true or centre a wheel. bike shops can do this work very quickly and cheaply (£5 to £10) so let them do it.
