Creaky headset

Hi
i have discovered that my my bike creeks a bit if i put the front break on hard and push the bike forward so the fork compresses slightly, i am pretty confident the noise is coming from the headset, is it likely that the headset needs replaced?
It is a cane creek solos. After checking the cane creek website i noticed that instead of having a star fangled nut fitted, i have a bolt that goes the whole length of the steerer tube. Is this normal or a botch job from the guy that i bought the bike off?
thanks in advance

Hi there,
Funnily enough I have had this exact same problem only 2 days ago on a 2 month old Enduro. To cut a long story short the cap bolt on my headset was completely loose and the fork was moving ever so slightly so when i pushed down on my fork, the whole thing would creak.
I was told to:
1). tighten the cap bolt by 1/4 turn
2) Hold the front brake and rock the bike fore and aft.
Keep repeating those two steps until there is no play. Then tighten up the 'pinch' bolts to their correct torque. Since then my forks have been solid, and the annoying creak has gone.
(Oh and I also re-greased my forks)
Hope that helps!
