Rocking freewheel
I’m building up an old bike with a 6-speed screw-on freewheel and I’ve noticed that the freewheel rocks slightly from side to side when it’s coasting - probably only a few mm but it’s disturbing. I gather this might be due to not putting it on quite straight or even crossing the threads, in which case I don’t think there’s a serious problem (it hasn’t been ridden yet so hasn’t been tightened under load). But is there anything else I should check for when I take it off? And is a degree of wobble normal or should I try to eliminate it completely?

I doubt you have cross threaded the freewheel, i think a bit of wobble is fairly common. If it does not affect shifting don't worry about itHe is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0

Common on the old style freewheels indeed. It's down to the way they are constructed. It shouldn't affect shifting because once the pawls are engaged, the float disappears.0
