Charged to look at my bike

A few months ago I took one of my bikes into a cycle shop; the owner said that it'd have to be put into a queue to be looked at. He said I'd have to give them £20 to look at it... Is this normal? I have taken my bike into other shops over the years and not one has asked me to pay them to 'look at it'.

I'll be happy to look at your bike for £10 :D

Seriously though, I assume you took it in because it has a problem? If you want him to fix it then you'll have to pay for his time. If you only want him to tell you what's wrong with it then it still takes up his time so paying for that isn't unreasonable. Check what you get for your £20.

Depends on your look, most shops shouldn't charge just to look at it. You might need to wait if they're busy, but I wouldn't charge anyone to look at a bike.

the question is a bit vague - why did you feel the bike needed 'looking at'...?

I'll look at it for a fiver, but I know nought about bikes but I'm cheap. and cheerful and live in the wardrobe.

    What needs 'looking at' ?

If you asked them to 'look at' your gears for instance, aren't you asking them to adjust them rather than just 'view' them ?
