stripped BB thread

To cut a long story short, basically the threads on my RH side BB cup and the BB shell in the frame are pretty much completely stripped. It's definitely new BB time, but is there anything that can be done about the frame or is it time for a new frame too?
Not chuffed as i just spent a lot of money building this bike up and now it's shagged!

LBS time and see what they can do.
might come right with a chase.
or there are some Square taper BB that dont need threads, or send it to somewhere like argosracing for a BB insert."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Hmm, yeah may have to take to the LBS some time in the week if i'm not working... more money0
-
Had the BB on my Morewood chased and faced a cpl of weeks ago by Behind Bars in Glasgow, a cracking wee shop.
Cost: £12.

I only pointed that out to let you know that it won't cost the earth.0

what BB?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I picked up a Token ex-type BB from CRC for £17.
What crank do you have?0 -
It's an external one from an SLX crankset, i'm going to need one with really long threads, so diabolus, saint, hope or something similar...0
-
Yeah, the Saint drive side cup has much longer threads. It depends how bad your threads are.
Off to the LBS with you, young man!0 -
Because i'd like some extra security. And i did want to get a hope BB at some point anyway.0
-
I'm not sure if the threads on the Hope one are any longer, actually. They do last much longer though.0
-
Well you get what you pay for with the Hope BB.0

as you can do with any of them.
not sure the hope threads are longer than the shimano drive side anyway."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Well just got it back from the LBS, he's chased it out and fitted a new shimano BB, came to £45 total. He reckons it'll last ok. We'll see. Didn't go for the hope one as it was a lot of money and the threads weren't any longer anyway. I was under the impression that the hope bearings were easier to change anyway?0

some Shimano cups have been known to come in a bit undersize, which could have been you old issue.
Betd do a bearing fitting service for shimano cups, with better bearings as well."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

It seems i spoke to soon, had the BB to fit my BB mount chain guide and it wont tighten up, on closer inspection, it doesn't look like he's done much, if anything to the threads0

And, are you aware the one of the drive side spacers needs to be taken out, since the chainguide takes it's place?0 -
all he could do is remove the metal that was in the wrong place.
so you did not give him the guide to fit? so the BB was just being held in by the 2.5mm of thread that the guide has now taken away.
try and find cups with more thread, a different way of fitting the device, no device or back to Square taper cranks and a BB that does not need any threads."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

E type BB?0
-
Yep, external.
I'm not sure why my post has been deleted :? So i'll copy and paste it from another forum...
Yes I did remove the BB after they fitted it yes, a little daft i know, but if the threads were ok then it should have held. And yes i removed a driveside spacer so that it was being held in by the same amount of thread as before.
Took it back to the LBS again, he said try and take a spacer out of the drive side so it's just the chain guide and stick it on the other side, only problem there is, i need the spacer between the guide and the BB for crank clearance against the ISCG bolts and the top guide of the device itself.
So, now my options appear to:
1. be a BB with a longer thread, but i run the risk of that still not working and spending more money on a BB
2. Send it to argos cycles for an insert in the BB, which will cost about £100 after postage, given what i've already spent on the frame, and the fact that i'm trying to save for university next month, not something i really want to do.
3. Flog the frame, making a loss, and slap the components on a 456 frame or something similar and buy a new FS frame next year when i can afford it.
Option 3 is looking increasing good.0 -
Did you get the frame cheap, I take it?0
-
Cost me about £260 for frame and shock + £20 postage, then i spent a good few days stripping and refinishing it, the materials for that came to about £20 or so, then i spent about £15 on a seal kit for the shock and then about £50 on the new bearings and getting them fitted. I don't really want to spend any more on it, as to me, it just won't be worth it.0
-
That's a yes then.
Hmm. Food for thought.
Sorry to hear about the ball-ache it's caused you though.0 -
If you’ve spent so long on the frame why give up so early on it?
There something wrong somewhere, if I were you id maybe buy a cheap octalink crankset, and buy and E-type octalink bottom bracket.
The E type bottom bracket is slightly wider and the threads run deeper so that it can be used with a chain device.
Though you mention ISCG tabs, which if your chain device is ISCG fitting means that if you fit a cartridge BB the BB will not be affected by the Chain device at all and will pass through the central hole of the chain device and your BB will tighten up against the frame?0 -
The chain device should make no difference, as it simply replaces one of the drive side spacers.
And Yeehaa, the threads were fine when i got the frame. The reason it was cheap (i assume) is because the paint job was knackered and it was 3 years old.0 -
So, what messed up the threads then?0
-
I've no idea, maybe I just didn't tighten the BB up enough when I installed it?0
