^ don't use vegetable oil or WD40!
I get a 1ltr bottle of thin car gearbox oil from my local motor factor. Works just as well as any other oil in my experience, plus it's quite literally a tiny fraction of the cost of stuff from the bike shop.
Whatever oil you use, do make sure you clean it properly. When I started working in the bike shop, the old mechanic told me that if I wouldn't put it in my mouth, it wasn't clean enough.0 -
use beef dripping, Its free when you have a roast. car oil is relatively expensive.0

Clean it, gt85 it, wipe it, dry it, wax it.0

GT85 or WD40 on a cloth, run the chain through it both directions, repeat until the chain is nice and clean.
Lube it with oil, 3in1, engine oil, bike specific oil (more expensive) and wipe off any excessHe is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
