Hi all

this topic is probably done to death but as I have specific parts I would like some advice please :)

I have:
10 speed veloce front chain set 39/53
campag record front mech
10 speed ergo ultra shift levers
KMC XLS gold chain at 56" (16" centers chainstay to chain set)
Veloce 10 speed rear mech
HERE GOES - ULTEGRA 11-23 cassette 10 speed. THIs WAS DONE AS MY FULCRUM 7s are shimano SRAM only and were running an 8 speed shimano HG30/campag mirage mix previously (sucessfully).

The system seems to work well with only a couple of the 20 gear shifts mumbling slightly. Is there anyone with experience of mixing in this way that may have any hints/tipson how to tune the rear to get a more perfect match?

any information would be gratefully received. ALTERNATIVELY - ANYONE WITH A FULCRUM 7 REAR WHEEL AND CAMPAG FREEHUB AND 10 SPEED VELOCE UPWARD CASSETTE WHO WANTS TO SWAP FOR A SHIMANO ULTEGRA FULCRUM 7 WHEEL LET ME KNOW!!

Many thanks in advance

:D

My neighbours son (who's a professional track cyclist) has a Scott with mainly 105 parts and Campy 10 speed shifters (Xenons maybe). He says he likes Campag kit a lot and it all works well together.

You want a ShiftMate! Basically, there's not much getting round the cable pull and geometry of the rear mech - it's never going to index perfectly, unless you can change the cable pull, which is what the shiftmate does.

Ive looked into this and as far as I can see the two done work well although im sure others may have done it. Im in a similar boat with my one bike running tiagra and the other athena. At some point im going to upgrade the tiagra, I was thinking of going to 105 as its my winter/training bike I see little point going to ultegra but at the same time I guess I could get veloce or similar and run the same groupset on both. I woudl be interested to see comments on your question from other members of the forum.
  • thanks for the information so far. the system is not running that badly and was set up as per veloce instructions centering the gear at no4. i have been told that using the middle gear to set up the veloce and tinkering with the settings at that position can give good reults. i will let you know when i have tried it. also there is an option to add 0.2mm spacers to some of the rings on the ultegra so I may also try this.

If anyone knows whether it is simple to change a shimano free hub with a campagnolo freehub on Fulcrum racing 7 please let me know as this is marginally cheaper than a new wheel.

    thanks again.
  • Hi

i have had further success / improvement by adjusting the rear mech but ignoring the campag veloce rear mech instructions (as obviously my cassette is Ultegra 11 to 23).

I started at the center cog and used the cable tensioner at the mech end to centralise the mech tooth with the cassette tooth. then I went in to 23 tooth ring and looked for amount of offset.

then went to 11 tooth and looked for offset. I noticed that the 11 tooth was fine and the 23 tooth was slightly short of centre i.e rear mech tooth too much towards21 tooth cog. So i adjusted the rear mech with the cable tensioner as before till the rear mech cog and 23 tooth cog were just aligned making sure there was no chatter at all. I found on changeing down that the 11 tooth was then also fine with this setting, so it must mean that the accumulated error is just about acceptable. so I now have a 99% ok setup with the odd very slight chatter very momentarily when changing to the 23 tooth cog. Very happy now. the setup is ok whether using 39 or 53 tooth cogs at the front.

    hope this helps someone else

Spanner and a allen key, really easy to do. Tutorial videos on interweb help. Freehub from Wiggle be careful there are two designs for Fulcrum freehubs, the on that fits the 7's is cheaper as well!!!!
