Steerer top cap gap query

I have a spacer above my stem but it gives a 4 or 5mm gap above the steerer is this safe or do I need to buy a smaller spacer? I know that some gap is required.

(just to reiterate, stem is 100% on steerer, its only a spacer that is sticking up)

Thanks

I would have said 3mm was ideal, 5mm should be okay.

It's fine. The gap is only there so the boss on the underside of the top cap has somewhere to go - once you tighten the stem clamp screws the top cap isn't doing anything anyway.i
