I believe back then Ultegra was 8 speed, any shimano 8 speed front deraullier will do, you could probably get away with a 9 speed but make sure to check this with your LBS. Go to LBS and ask them the same question. They arn't expensive, £35 maybe.
    Trek Madone 3.5 (RS80s, Arione)
    Trek Madone 3.1 (Upgraded)
    Ribble TT Bike
    Trek Mamba (Garry Fisher Collection)
  • I think 2002 is 9 speed -its the 6500 series. You need to search for a "FD 6503" (3 denotes triple). Any shimano 9 speed road front mech will work (105, dura-ace) - 10 speed will probably work too although others may know different.

You need to specify braze or band-on and if the latter, which diameter.

Should look like this bad boy; http://www.icyclesusa.com/bike-parts/sh ... -clamp.htm

Isn't there a number stamped on the back (i.e. the inside of the mech)?
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.
  • Thanks all. I found my original receipt from 2004 not 2002 as I thought. Its a 105 triple. I'll look for number!... thanks again ... :D

Yes, the diameter 31,8 was on the inside. *I haven't taken the old one off yet so there may be a model number that I haven't found yet. - thanks.

Try and get a 5503 or 6503 as the later 10 speed versions, 5603 and 6603 are a tw4t to setup correctly.

from 9 to 10 speed Shimano changed the spacing and a 10 speed needs to be lifting higher than normal as to clear the middle ring when shifting.

Tried this when my wife run a 9 speed Ultegra triple and although it worked, sort of with a 10 speed mech, it was never quite right.

When I eventualy sourced the correct 6503 mech it worked perfectly

Mine old one has FD5504 stamped on it - which is interesting. I thought the 4th digit indicated triple or double?

do you mean the 10 speed mechs are difficult to set up on an otherwise 9 speed setup, or generally?

You've either got a quadruple mech or the '3' being a triple model is just coincidence - I rather suspect the latter.

The 10 speed mechs running a nine speed triple chainset are a tw4t to get right

best look for a second hand 6503 or 5503 on ebay

Ok, The FD5504 is history! Now trying a FD4503. Looks like it should do the job. However, when I set it up I cant seem to get it close enough to the crank. I followed the instruction and have screwed home the screw nearest to the seat post. Need a few more milli meters but I have run out of screw! ...:(
  • Ah! - Ok. Much better now. It WAS the other screw that needed adjusting. So far so good!
    :)
