I am getting ambitions to make myself a pair of wheels for my Trek 1.7.

I have had it for 14 months and although people are a bit sneering about the Bontrager wheels, I think they are fine. Anyway, they have stayed true in spite of a bit of London commuting and quite a few miles now. ( I have Mavic Aksiums on my Italian steel frame and I can't tell whether they are better, to be frank).

Both are factory made, with alarmingly few, thick spokes (flat ones on the Mavics) and work fine, but I suspect truing these up would be tricky if not impossible if you do bash them.

So far I have made up three wheels, for a Pashley and a iron horse commuter, and now want to have a nice pair of proper wheels on the Trek.

Would Dura Ace hubs be overkill on a bike used for pottering and charity rides? I am not likely to do anything competitive.

I am after all-round, general purpose and excellent quality, rather than lightness. Also must be cup and cone. So maybe Ultegra or 105 would be just as good. Or Royce? Any views?

In the meantime, I will run the Bontragers into the ground.

Dura Ace hubs on a trek 1.7? Serious Overkill, just go with some 105s if you are thinking about shimano! Spend the money you save on a better rim or something nicer, as long as your hubs work and are reliable thats all that matters. Ultegra and 105 will work for longer than Dura Ace aswell as Dura ace sacrifices nothing for performance, Ultegra and 105 are built to last!
