Quick Release Rear Skewer Lengths Question

Good afternoon all,

I have just got some quick release skewers second hand for a Specialized Hardrock Sport 2005 that i am restoring. Front one fits fine not a problem. The rear one through i am having problems with. It doesn't seam long enough. The skewer measures 6 1/2 inches (165 mms) long. When i try to fit it, the end nut is forced off by the spring. Now is it possible to get a longer length axle and remove the lever from the shorter one and put onto a new longer axle, as the colour really matches the bike (vain i know :) )

Is this the longest length quick release or are there any longer ones ??

Cheers

Andy

You don't need the springs. As long as there are at least 4 or 5 threads wound in the nut, will be fine.

sounds like you have something else going on there that is wrong.

standard shimano rear Qr are 6 1/2" (165mm) and are used on most Spesh bikes as standard.

  • Right - Done some measuring:

Rear Frame width for the wheel: 140 mms

Rear Wheel hubs: DT Swiss Disc 370 Disc Hub with a 9 speed sram cassette: 135 mms from end to end of axle.

The wheel sits fine in the frame but the ends of the axle don't sit flush with the outside of the drop outs on the frame. They sit slightly inside them.

On the q/r skewer there is a spacer by the lever which measures 10 mm. Is it possible to get a narrower spacer perhaps ??

there should be no spacer unless you mean the base of the QR mechanism.

everything else sounds normal. and yes the axle should finish short of the outer edges.

  • Hi, yes i do mean the base of the q/r mechanism. Bit stumped now. Don't want to try to force it on as i will end up ruining the thread on the nut if it keeps popping off.
  • I think we may need some pics on here for this one.....

sounds like the Acorn has had the threads stripped out of it.

new lever assy needed or Acorn.

  • Ok tried again. When i put the skewer through all that i can see from the other side is about 2mm of thread to attach the acorn onto. Once i try to close the q/r then it forces the acorn off. So looking at this i am guessing i need a longer q/r axle. Any ideas when i might get one as looking around the web i can only seam to find 165 mm :(

Really do appreciate the help you have given me this afternoon.

    Many thanks

Very tricky to hold q/r, bike and camera :)

Is the skewer in the front wheel longer? Dumb question but worth asking just on the off chance.
