Outers and Shadow mechs

Morning all

I have Jagwire Switch outers on my bike at the moment. Im looking to change these, maybe to Gore Ride on or Jagwire Ripcords, in the coming weeks. Im running an XT Shadow rear mech and when i fitted it i had some trouble with the end cap on the existing outer. It wouldn’t fit in the shadow mech (too big), so i had to cut it off and push the outer into the mech. Works fine, but its not staying like that.

My question is whether shadow mechs can take these kind of outers ? and if they can, whether the pack will include the correct end cap ?

Lastly, any other recs on outers i could consider ? i was considering XTR outers as well, but ideally i want something coloured instead of black or grey

There is a standard so yes - don't know why or what wouldn't fit before.

Me too if I knew what didn't fit.

You're saying the ferrul (end cap) on the outer that goes into the fitting on the mech was too big?

Don't know about other makes but all Shimano outers (e.g. SP41) you can take off the ferrul/replace change and do what you want with.

you didn't accidentally buy brake cable outer or anything that? I think they are slightly different sizes possibly?

yeah brake cable is typically 5mm to gears being 4mm??

you could always get some SP41 outer (xtr) from the lbs and some heatshrink and colour them what ever colour you like!!

yep, thats the bit that wouldnt fit

would upload a pic, but cant access photobox etc at work

@ jairaj - didnt buy the outers, they came with the bike

Reading this, it does seem that the outer is a little wider then Shimano...

Maybe some brute force is required

You genius! I was thinking of getting white brake hose, but this would be a much cheaper way of doing it. ~£8 a meter for white brake hose compared to ~£6 for 10m of heatshrink.
