Hi there - does anyone know what the advantages are of the above pedals in stainless steel as opposed to chromoly? The latter are cheaper and more widely available.

Thanks

The stainless steel ones are 4g lighter.

Any view on the longevity or quality of the different materials? Or is it purely weight?

stainless shouldnt rust! whereas cromoly if scratched will rust! or if not looked after whether scratched or not they will rust!
  • Thanks for that - I think if we're talking 4g and possibly a bit of rust, I will go with the chromolys and maybe treat myself to stainless steel for one of my other bikes if I like the system. And more importantly, if my knees prefer it!

  • Hi - just one other query with this. I've gone for the chromolys which I'm intending on fitting to a pair of Sidis with Millenium 3 soles. I haven't received my speedplays yet, but the Sidi instructions state that I need some 7mm and 11mm speedplay screws. I am presuming the former are included as they seem to be an integral part of the cleat. But am I right in thinking that I will need to order the 11mm screws separately? If so, I'll do it today - as I'll be wanting to get out on the road with them asap :P

You'll get everything you need with the pedals as far as I recall.

    2x

    Pedal
    Cleat
    3- to 4-bolt adapter plate
Set of short screws for the adapter plate
Set of long(er) screws for the adapter plate
Set of small screws to attach the cleat to the adapter plate
Set of snap shims for fitting to varying shoe soles.

    It's a heavy little box!

  • Hi guys - sorry about bumping an old thread, but I was hoping that somebody would be able to help me.

I've been using a pair of stainless steel Speedplay zeros for about a year.

When I was cycling home today, I suddenly realised that there was an awful screeching noise coming from one of the pedals - it felt like my crank was about to fall off.

On closer inspection, I've discovered that my left Speedplay pedal is no longer spinning freely - it takes a real effort to get it to turn 360.

I've never actually had to repair a set of pedals before. Is it possible to replace the bearings in these things (if that's the problem) and if so, is it fairly easy to do so?
  • Just try re greasing them first. Its simple to do. All you ned to do remover the small screw at the end of the pedal and place a grease gun up to it and press in the new grease. this will force the old grease out the other side of the pedal. Do this till its the new grease coming out. If this doesn't rectify it them you will need to take it apart and sort it out.

Speedplays need regular greasing to maintain the bearings. It tells you this in the instructions.
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

  • Definitely try re-greasing first.

I use Morgan Blue from wiggle and got a syringe to inject the grease (far cheaper than getting the official Speedplay stuff)!

P.S. Maybe O.T.T. but I do this every month
  • I do it roughly every 50 or so rides. Depending on how wet it is as well.

I re-grease when the pedal starts to spin freely. I use a standard hospital-type syringe. You have to press very hard until clean grease comes out of the far end of the pedal.
