Done my first bike ride today, about a 10 mile round trip and sadle was the only bad point.

However I dont want to spend a fortune as I'm just starting out and also think Im going to have to get some better tyres for on the road use.

Were you wearing padded shorts/under shorts? If not then I'd try them before changing the saddle as a new saddle mightn't help much on it's own.

Saddle wise I'd look at either the SDG Bel Air or Charge Spoon. Both decent saddles and not too expensive.

  • Hi, had some cheap padded shorts on from Sports Direct, dont think they did much.

I noticed they had some muddy fox ones but at £20, maybe these will be better?
  • i have a ragley checky saddle you can have for £15... would even drop it off in Blackpool for you

ridden it once, but got a deal on a different saddle that I couldn't refuse so i replaced it!
  • Thanks mate, will that be better that what I have now?
  • possibly.. they've had some good reviews, similar to the charge spoon I think.

A numb backside is to be expected after a first ride of 10 miles, it takes time to get used to being in the saddle. If you're doing 10 miles a couple of times a week and still sore after a month then look at changing your saddle.

Hmmm. Never found cheap pads to that good to be honest - except the ones from Aldi which are excellent for a fiver! The Muddy Fox ones look over priced for what they are.

I'd look at a 6 or 8 panel pad - you'll notice the difference over the cheap pads. As already pointed out though you will probably notice the problem becoming less of a problem the more you ride.

Since it's your first bike ride, I'd stick with what you've got for at least the short term. It takes a while for your backside to get used to riding.
I told this to a friend who was new to riding, and theyr response was
"seriously? Your bum gets kind of numb to it after a while? Is that a good thing?"

    Which is an interesting observation.
    hmm.
  • Thanks for the advice guys :)
