Hi Guys,

new to the forums and an 'aging' biker.

Bought myself my first hardtail earlier this year (Trek 6300) and am loving the trails and the downhill riding. I have just been offered a 5 year old Giant NRS1 for £500 which would give me my first full sussy bike

I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice on this bike for a 55 year old who should be walking the dog, but ashamedly knows how to push the boundaries and have fun............. should I buy???

Graham

To be honest they are a great bike....though £500 is a bit rich you can pick them up on ebay for around £250-300....if he doesn't drop the price then don't bother.

For someone just sarting his golden years, I would spend £40 less and buy this...brand new with a warranty the spec should meet your needs.

Also have a shop around on the big online stores, chain reaction, leasuire lakes, wynstanleys, wiggle etc...

  • Thanks PudseyP,

I think you have told me something that I already knew, but without the experience of years of mtb experience.

As for your suggestion of a ful sussy bike under £500, sounds good, but will it keep me happy on the 'black' runs as I have quickly moved onto those..........

Apologies if some of my reply sounds rude....the bike in question has adjustment at the rear to give a max 4.4" travel coupled to a u turn fork from 80-130mm...which is comparable to my Marin which I kinda ride hard....so unless your doing 6ft drops it would be ideal.

Sometimes it bugs me that when I go to trail centres you see people riding the black so they can tell there mates..but what they don't say is they ride them badly. many a trail are wrecked this way with braking bumps everywhere as people do not have the skill set to ride them.....

If your hurtling down them clearing table tops and getting big air which to me is more akin to downhill...a word that is used to generally (which I doubt..the rude bit !) then no this would not be good enough...then you will need six inch travel plus and therefore a more expensive bike which takes more effort to peddle when climbing...my point is you have to be honest with yourself on your capabilites...as I often laugh at the knobs who have big travel bikes that I pass on the trails as they are hanging on for dear life on the brakes beacause they don't have the skills to use them...but think they are cool and rad.....!!

  • PudseyP,

Thats the honest answer I wanted and and grateful for. Please dont worry about appearing to be rude. Things are misread on the net all the time and I'm savvy enough not to take offence.

I am, I reckon, quite fit for my age and whilst I'll never be 25 again, I reckon I can give most average 35 year olds a run for their money. Suppose that comes with being a mountain walker/climber and not a couch spud.

I've read your post a couple of times and yes, I agree with what you say and it has made me think of what I do actually need and what I therefore should be paying.

Honestly, many thanks for your advice and as a result, I've said no to the bike subject of this post.

As for mountain biking generally, I do it because I enjoy it...............just wish I'd done it earlier but having said that at least I'm doing it

Thanks for the response....I would try the Mongoose though as they represent great value for money...the one I posted the link to is a great buy. If you don't think it may be enough travel they also do the Teocali....it's a bit more travel (5.7") so should handle anything. I had this bike two years ago and it was great. I bit more expensive, but at £799 it's a bargain spec wise and comfortable to peddle all day.

It compares to bikes twice the price, if you have a Mongoose dealer near try them for size then order an older model from Paul's Cycles as you will save pounds !
