Iphone tried to kill me....

Today I set off on a nice ride through the lovely picturesque, leafy lanes of South London on the way to see a mate at his house in Crystal Palace, and despite a few wrong turns and roads that would destroy tractor tyres, I arrived safe and sound, feeling fit and in one piece.
During my time there, my friend wanted to show off his Iphone, so entered my post code and his into the wretched thing and asked it to plot out a route home.
Foolishly I remembered the details and departed to see if the Evil white little bastard would help me arrive home faster on a shorter route.
Everything was ok until the route took me onto Rochester Way (A2) from Brownhill road, which is a 50mph road more like a Motorway, with 2 lanes of traffic screaming along at 80+ and only a small hard shoulder formed from the blood and tears of cyclists mixed with bent and shattered bike parts to protect me... It was Brown lycra time but I girded my loins and rode the fastest 4 miles of my life!
As I turned off into Bexleyheath, the power just drained out of my legs, and I had to limp back to Dartford in a low gear...
So, moral of the story? Iphones are the Devil!!

If I was riding through South London, I'd be riding the fastest 4 miles of my life too.0

Yeah I think most phone GPS systems/direction systems assume you are driving and there's not much other option. My Nokia X6 tends to try to take me along motorways and dual carriageways when I ask for directions....Do not write below this line. Office use only.0

I have Tom Tom on my phone which allows you to choose cycling or walking options.0

I've got a map.0

Ah the good ol map...must say normally a fan of sat nav or google earth were you can select walking route etc....But whilst away t'up north by Whitley Bay I turned to the old map from Tourest Info Centre...it had bike routes and everything planned out on there for you....maps are the future!Felt AR4

The screens not to bright in poor light though, you may need secondary illumination to read it in the dark, but they do fold to make for easy transportation0 -
What are they like for battery life?
Wouldn't know. I only use the free range variety.0 -

But they are often accompanied by an annoying noise ...."tut, men! why don't you just ask someone the way, tut, men! why don't you just ask someone the way, tut, men! why don't you just ask someone the way, tut, men! why don't you just ask someone the way, "The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

I get my nice friendly and much less murderous HTC desire soon.. or even the Evo 4G is I can hold out till september!

You should have checked the box to stop the Nagware when you got the app.Cycling weakly0 -

I really cannot see how from Brownhill Road you ended up on the A2. You must have joined on the slip road from the South Circular at Westhorne Avenue?0

I just rely on someone with a Garmin GPS or a Blackberry, and then just hope they can work themhttp://www.youtube.com/user/Eurobunneh - My Youtube channel.0

Yeah that was pretty much it... the main junction where you either go straight for Shooters hill or left to the A2 up the sliproad... Came off at the next turn off which was Danson road leading up to Bexleyheath
Not something I am eager to try again =P0 -
I would suggest you came off Westhorne Avenue too early.
What you should have done, was continue under the A2 flyover up to the Well Hall roundabout, take Rochester Way down to Falconwood then turn left into Welling Way.
At the end of Welling Way, turn right, then you're on the old Watling St. Its a straight road through Welling High St, Bexleyheath Broadway into Crayford and Dartford.
Alternatively, head up Well Hall Road past the Steven Lawrence memorial and turn right at the old Police Station on to Shooters Hill Road, ideal for a bit of Hill training on the way home ;-)0 -
I stuck to the path that the evil Iphone had laid out for me hence the battle with the Demon cars/lorries of the A2 hehe!
Next time, ill stick to the original route... Its a bit longer but MUCH safer and with Shooters hill both ways!0 -
I'd suggest if you turn onto that slip road you must have seen as you approached the flyover it was a busy dual carriage way?
That said I've seen quite a few cyclists going along there.0 -
S0d riding that stretch of the A2!
Surprised you did'nt know how busy it was if your only from Dartford....0 -
All wrong stuff people, OP, what speed were you doing? :P0
-
Im a non-driver so I dont pay any attention to roads when im in a car hehe!
it took me about 10 minutes of frantic cycling to make the 4 miles... so about 24mph (which for me is good!)0 -
I remember some time in early Feb, I went on a longish trip and I was getting towards emptying mah tanks... then i just happened to come out on something like a dual carriageway! It was also slightly uphill, but somehow, just somehow, the cars going past helped me get through it.0
