    Canon Ixus range.

Cant fault my 65 although I expect it will have been superseded several times by now.

    Canon ixus, or Canon powershot.

Or, if you want a slightly bulkier one, with MASSIVE zoom, have a look at Fuji's finepix range.

    Another Ixus fan here!

Check out the official Canon outlet store on eBay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet
They auction off factory reconditioned cameras and stuff with a full guarantee and fully re-packaged. That's where I buy mine and they've all been top goods.

That Canon outlet doesn't look much of a bargian for most things to be honest.

Another shop worth mentioning is warehouse express
    and PIXMANIA

I'd say an Ixus too, they're not often the best bargains but they're great at what they do. Wish I'd replaced my old Ixus 800 with a newer one instead of my TZ7 to be honest. Compact, tough, and they perform well.

Huge zooms can be good for everyday touristing mind, but they tend to make for cameras that don't work as well as snappers- slower to start up, bigger, more expensive etc.

well, fine if you think a refurbed 450D is worth over £340. Personally, I don't.
It's not criminally expensive, it just doesn't seem too bargaineous, for a refurb.

I'd say the Fuji Finepix too. It is a little bigger than a standard compact, but still quite small, and as Yeehaa says you get that big zoom lens [10x, not 12 as sometimes stated]. Also you have full control over shutter speed and aperture, plus a load of actually useful features making this a flexible beast.

Only critiscisms I have are at wide angle you get some barrel distortion, and ramping the ISO up does introduce noise even at moiderately low levels.

Apart from that, nothing else really for this cash has all this.

well, ramping up the ISO introduces noise on all cameras though, I can;t honestly say the finepix is any worse or better than any other cameras in it's price range.

Good little camera. The silver one's not in stock though.

Probably worth asking, what kind of things you're planning on taking pictures of?
For some kind of things, a camera with a wider angle lens like that Ixus is great, but for other kinds of shots, a big zoom will be better.

    THIS

I can't fault mine. Awesome little camera, really.

My W-200 (the earlier version of the W-270) has taken

Well, you get the idea, it's a pretty sweet camera. I really rate mine, and recommend it. I don't have any 'action shots' but I have no doubt it would be ace. AND, mine is the older version, so I'd be totally shocked if the newer, high model was anything but improved.

They don't really exist, as the zoom lens of that order does take up some space. That said, the Fuji comes up pretty small.

I'm a very big fan of Sony DSLRs, but haven't tried any of their under £200 compacts, so I couldn't possibly comment on how good they are.
(shock horror, a forum member does NOT reccomend something they haven't tried  )

Whereas, I have used the Canon and Fuji ones, and know that they're a good buy.
RTW-Chaz's photos seem to demonstrate that the 'ickle sony's are great as well though!

As Sonic says, the Fujis are fairly compact. They will comfortably fit in a camelbak, but not really a "pop it in your pocket" kind of thing.
  • Be aware of the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom. Digital zoom is a waste of time for anyone with access to a computer, since all it essentially does is crop the image.

I had an old Fuji years ago. In fact I've still got it. And it was an awesome little camera. Don't know how the current models compare, so it's a waste of time me telling you that really :)

In fact I'm not too clued up on what's on the market at the moment, and I'm not sure if this still exists in current compacts, but shutter lag... It'll drive you nuts. I.e. you press the shutter and 2 seconds later it takes the pic. Do any of them still do that? It's worth finding out which, because you don't want one..

Yeah, I still would use my phone for those 'snap it' moments when biking, as I would be taking it anyway, but if plan to be a bit more serious, the S1500 will go in the bag.

Gotta love the manual control too.

Gotta be careful with that manual control. They have enough to get you hooked, but pretty soon you'll be eyeing up those SLRs

Manual control allows you to set the shutter speed and aperture, rather than have a auto function or programme do it.

Many of them still have manual controls. :P

You don't need to use them though. Any camera you can set to auto, so it's not something to worry about.
