Why?
anything from 112 to 116 for a geared bike depending on where you get it from.
if you want to know how many links you need then size it according to the info on Park tools."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I recently changed mine, measured it up against the old one and took the excess links off but the chain was slipping alot when under pressure so I took two more links off but it is still jumping so I was wondering if there was a standard number or if the chain could be too wide?0

sounds more like your cassette needs replacing than links taking out fella,Timmo.

if after a new chain its skipping under load i'd say chances are cassette's on its last legs too, that or your indexings out which if just fitting a new chain shouldnt be??
how worn was the old chain?Timmo.

Not old, few months maybe. My middle chain ring was loose and snapped the chain when I was out riding.0
